September 28, 2022, Round table "Cooperation between the countries of the Middle East and Africa"

On September 28 at 16:30, the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a round table on the topic: “Cooperation between the countries of the Middle East and Africa”, organized by the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAfr RAS) together with the Middle East Club of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry and with the support of the Center for the Study of the Countries of North Africa and the Horn of Africa of the IAF RAS.

Andrey Berezhnov, a junior researcher at the Center for Global and Strategic Studies of the Institute for Strategic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke about Turkey's approaches to the implementation of the foreign policy course on the African continent. In his speech, he detailed the main principles that guide Turkey in implementing its policy in Africa.

Anna Semenova, a junior researcher at the Center for the Study of North Africa and the Horn of Africa, IAF RAS, made a presentation “Points of influence of Arab countries in Africa”.

The event touched upon the issue of "African vector in Iran's foreign policy since 2015". A report on this topic was made by Ilya Vaskin, junior researcher at the Center for Scientific Information and International Relations of the Institute of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as Alena Kalmykova, a student at the Faculty of International Journalism of MGIMO. During their speeches, they highlighted such aspects as the institutions of Iran's foreign policy, the Cold War in the Middle East, Iran's economic penetration into Africa, and Iran's cultural penetration into Africa.

Gleb Sugakov and Andrey Barinov, junior researchers at the Center for Global and Strategic Studies of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, presented the projects of the Council of Young Scientists of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, spoke about the mentoring program, as well as about the XXI All-Russian School of Young Africanists, which will be held at the Diplomatic Academy on November 30, 2022.

The moderator of the round table was Arutyunyan A.G., a 1st-year student of the Master's Degree at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. Researchers from the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute for the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after A. Academician G.A. Arbatov, students of specialized programs of the Diplomatic Academy, MGIMO, HSE University, and Russian State University for the Humanities.
