The Centre for History and Cultural Anthropology and the Centre for Southern Africa Studies are holding the National Conference with International Participation:

COLONIALISM, NEOCOLONIALISM, DECOLONISATION: RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND CONTEMPORARY DISCOURSE

Date: 10–11 October 2023
Venue: Institute for African Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, with an optional online attendance (videoconferencing).

The dismantling of the colonial system, in the mid-20th century led only to nominal independence of the liberated countries. Colonialism continues to exist and make headway as neo-colonialism and even post-neo-colonialism. As early as 1965, Kwame Nkrumah used the term ‘neo-colonialism’ to refer to economic relations involving exploitation of former colonies after and despite their political independence. Evidently, the rebirth, not collapse, of colonialism was implemented in ways concealed from the international community. Most of the newly liberated countries have gone through a transformation of colonial dependence, reaching the stage of neo-colonialism.

The neo-colonial policies and exploitation of Africa have revealed the need for further and, hopefully, final decolonisation of the continent. History shows that attempts at decolonization have largely come down to changes in the methods of Western exploitation of the Afro-Asian world and gradually morphed into globalisation, serving as its prerequisite. Besides, in the modern sense, colonialism is not only conquest and development of new territories but a way of thinking and interacting, a system of discursive exercise of power. Neo-colonialism, realising the same goals as the conventional colonial regimes, was in many ways more subtle and sophisticated, affecting ideology, culture, science, education and information. Modern neo-colonialism has changed, acquiring a global character. It achieves the same goals by other, ‘soft’ methods alone or in combination with conventional economic, financial and military pressure.

The following themes will be discussed:
      • colonialism, neo-colonialism, decolonisation in historical retrospective
      • contemporary discourse on the theory and practice of neo-colonialism and the struggle against it
      • analysis of modern methods of neo-colonial influence: economic, political, military, socio-cultural, ideological, etc.

The conference will be held in a mixed mode (online and offline).
