On April 15, 2024, presidential elections were held in Rwanda. The current head of state, 66-year-old Paul Kagame (Tutsi), who ran for the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) party, was re-elected for a fourth – this time 5-year – term, receiving 99.18% (8.8 million) of the votes. . In any other country such results would have been considered "incredible", but in Rwanda under Kagame's rule elections became a tightly controlled electoral process, so despite growing opposition, the incumbent easily won a "landslide" victory over two rivals - Frank Habineza of the Democratic Green Party and independent candidate Philip Mpayimana.
