April 16, 2025. Research Seminar “Women in South Africa: Gender, Economy and Power”
On April 16 at 12:00 at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Room 10) a regular research seminar of the Center for African Strategy in BRICS will be held. The event will focus on the position of women in South Africa - from invisible and unpaid domestic labor to representation in politics.
The workshop will be held in a hybrid format in English. Two papers will be presented during the seminar:
1. Dr. Ashleigh Shangare (Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs) – “Navigating Power and Patriarchy: Addressing Gender Based Violence in African Politics”
- Dr. Ashleigh Shangare is an international relations expert with a PhD from the University of Pretoria. She is currently working at the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs. Her research focuses on the role of women in African politics, especially gender and political representation on the continent.
2. Tamara Andreeva (Institute for African Studies) – “South African Women: Different Cultural Backgrounds, Similar Problems”
- Tamara Andreeva will present the first findings of research on women in South Africa. In her paper, she will discuss the differences between men and women in paid and unpaid work, as well as the role of women in the family and in the labor market. Special attention will be paid to the gender roles and the challenges faced by African households in South Africa.
Daria Turyanitsa (Institute for African Studies) will be the discussant.
