The military and political situation in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHOA) region and the Red Sea region as a whole is characterized by rapid changes and maintains a steady trend toward further deterioration.

The latest escalation of the military and political situation occurred in late 2025, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recognized Somaliland's right to self-determination on December 26, 2025. The Israeli leader cited the Abraham Accords, signed at the initiative of US President Donald Trump, and emphasized his intention to cooperate with Somaliland as an independent and self-sufficient state. Tel Aviv expressed its readiness to provide assistance to the African country in the areas of agriculture, healthcare, technology, and economic and social development. Immediately afterward, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar paid an official visit to Somaliland. In April 2026, the governments of Israel and Somaliland appointed their official ambassadors.
