September 6-29, 2013: field research in the United Republic of Tanzania
September 6 to 29 the junior research fellows of the Institute for African Studies Oxana Ivanchenko and Petr Popov conducted a field research in the United Republic of Tanzania.
The research project within the framework of the The Russian Foundation for Humanitarian Research grant №13-31-01284 ("Mutual aid practices in African cities". Head of the project: PhD Daria Zelenova) took place in Dar-es-Salaam with the focus on the contemporary forms of social incorporation among the poorest social stratum mainly in two neighbourhoods of the city: Gongo-la-Mboto and Mbagala. Other districts, including Manzese, Tandale, Mwananyamala - were visited for illustrative purposes.
During the trip young scholars arranged a number of interviews with the leaders and members of the mutual help organizations and, in addition, staff members of the University of Dar-es-Salaam and Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy.
The results of the research are planned to be presented at the School of Young Africanists, African Studies Association annual meeting and XIII African Studies Conference.
