Visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola to the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences

On October 13, 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola Tete Antoniu, who arrived in Russia on a working visit, visited the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and met with its leadership. The guests were received by the Honorary President of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician A.M. Vasiliev, Deputy Director of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences Corresponding Member L.L. Fituni, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Angola V.N. Tararov, Head of the Center for South African Studies A.A. Tokarev, senior researcher Institute for African Studies S.V. Nenashev (former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Angola).

An hour and a half friendly conversation took place. Welcoming the guests, A.M. Vasiliev noted the long-standing warm relations of the Institute for African Studies and its employees with Angola, their great contribution to the study and popularization of knowledge about this country; in the establishment and expansion of bilateral cooperation. The role of the Institute, its leadership and staff in the preparation and holding of the Russia-Africa summit in 2019, as well as in preparation for the next such forum, was emphasized.

It was noted that often international initiatives put forward in different years by Russia and concerning not only bilateral, but also Russian-African cooperation, in general, were initially born and discussed within the walls of the Institute for African Studies. A.M. Vasiliev welcomed the appointment of the new Ambassador of the Republic of Angola and noted the interest of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Embassy of the Republic of Angola in strengthening ties with each other and the importance of their role in the development of relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Angola.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola highly appreciated the international authority of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, its role in supporting the anti-colonial struggle of the peoples of Angola, and after the proclamation of its independence - in the development of versatile relations between the two countries. The distinguished guest spoke about some important foreign policy initiatives of his country's leadership and confirmed the interest of the Angolan side in the development of bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Angola and the Russian Federation, stressed the importance of the role of the staff of the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Embassy of the Republic of Angola in this.
