September 19, 2023 Report by Nadezhda Khokholkova within the framework of the scientific seminar "Culture and Society"

On September 19, 2023, as part of the scientific seminar "Culture and Society", held by the Center for History and Cultural Anthropology, a report was given by Ph.D. in History, Senior Research Fellow Nadezhda Khokholkova “Symbols of “black heritage” in the perception of African-Americans.”

The speaker focused on the problems of representation and interpretation of “black heritage,” which in a broad sense is a set of material, cultural, and historical objects and symbols created by generations of people of African descent in the past, of value in the present and preserved for the future. The essence of the concept of “black heritage” and its associated associations were analyzed based on field research materials collected as part of the project “Black Heritage: The Historical Role of Africans and Their Descendants in the Cultural Memory of the United States” in 2021-2022. Particular attention was paid to visual symbols such as the Garvey Flag and the Black Heritage Flag, as well as images of historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Paul Robeson, and Malcolm X.
